Democracy By Design: Wear the Data That Shapes Your Choices
Wear the Data: A More Intentional Approach to Advocacy
I’ve always been drawn to clothing that tells a story. What started as hand-embroidered jeans turned into something more intentional when I began asking a different question: what if clothing could explain something, not just express it? That shift is what led me to start Illuminated Threads and to focus on turning real data into something people can wear, notice, and ask about.
From Design to Dialogue
Every piece starts the same way, not with a sketch but with data. The goal is to take information that is often buried in reports or articles and turn it into something visible, something you can wear, notice, and ask about. At first glance, the designs are subtle and read as patterns, but each one is built from real datasets translated into a visual form that fits into everyday life. That is intentional. The moment someone says “I like your sweatshirt” is also an opening, a chance to turn a compliment into a conversation and a conversation into understanding.
Why the 119th Matters Right Now

With the 2026 midterms approaching, I have been thinking a lot about one design in particular, the 119th. It is based on a simple but important relationship: who participates in elections and who ends up representing the country. The design places those two things side by side, comparing the racial and ethnic breakdown of voters and turnout with the composition of Congress. When you see them together, the gap becomes clear, and more importantly, it becomes tangible. Representation is not separate from participation, it is shaped by it. The next Congress will reflect who shows up.
Making Information Part of Everyday Life
Most people are not going to sit down and read a full report on voter turnout or representation, but they might scan a QR code on a sleeve. They might ask what a design means. They might engage with the data if it is presented in a way that feels accessible instead of overwhelming. That is the idea behind every piece, not to replace deeper learning but to make the first step easier and to bring information into spaces where it would not normally live.
The Product Should Reflect the Purpose
If the goal is to encourage more intentional engagement, the product itself has to reflect that. That means using recycled materials and donating 5% of every purchase to nonprofits working on the issues represented in each design. It also means being transparent. Every piece includes a QR code that links directly to the data behind it so people can explore it for themselves.
A Different Kind of Statement
Wearing something can be expressive, but it can also be informative. Those two things do not have to be separate. Choosing what you wear is a small decision, but it is one you make every day. It is an opportunity to reflect what you care about and how you engage with the world around you, not just by saying something, but by understanding it.
